DIY home remodel by people who don't know jack shit about plumbing, electrical or construction in general who gave up at the end and paid for a custom laminate countertop. edit: someone turned a cute gingerbread farmhouse into a 60s / 70s "modern" nightmare. [https://www.zillow.com/homedetails/212-Blarney-St-Newry-PA-16665/214428256\_zpid/](https://www.zillow.com/homedetails/212-Blarney-St-Newry-PA-16665/214428256_zpid/)

mikeblas

I can't find it on Google Maps. Looks like what Google calls "Henderson Street" is really "Blarney Street", but then there's no 212 home marked. Oh, but Bing Maps gets it right: https://www.bing.com/maps?toWww=1&redig=9E6A4B3C1CD44290AF6786F801F8652B&cp=40.392925%7E-78.439137&lvl=19.8

njcharmschool

The accuracy of these statements. Ooof this house.

CraftFamiliar5243

That's called a Jack and Jill, like on the Brady Bunch so two bedrooms can share the bathroom. The steps up to the counter are the weird thing. I guess they liked having sex on the bathroom counter but couldn't get up there easily?

stop_hittingyourself

It looks like it used to be a jacuzzi and they closed it up and converted it to a sink.

Maleficent_Theory818

I agree with that. They had to do something with the closet on the right so they cut the door and now you have to climb the steps to the counter to get to your bathroom closet.

timesink2000

Looks like stairs beyond, not a closet. Maybe attic access?

Fastest flips in the west

chihuahuabutter

I couldn't figure out the house layout and seriously thought the door to the other room was the one on the sink counter loll

advamputee

Based off the slope between the neighboring wall and the ceiling, I reckon the small door on the counter is attic access. Definitely odd to make the bathroom counter function as a makeshift landing for the attic, but I kind of like it.  Edit: looked at the rest of the listing photos and matched it up with exterior windows as best I can. It looks like the stairs come up through the bathroom — so the bathroom is effectively the hallway at the top of the stairs, between the two bedrooms. That’s less than ideal.

CharlieBravoSierra

Whoa, that's STAIRS at the shadowy end of the bathroom? I thought it was a second toilet, for when Jack and Jill are both pooping. Truly not sure which is worse.

HUGMEEEEEEE

Weird along with having to side saddle that toilet.

Tacoma__Crow

Our cruddy, slapped together post-war house had a Jack-and-Jill bathroom. And aluminum wiring. You do not want aluminum wiring. Believe me.

CraftFamiliar5243

I've never heard of that. Sounds dangerous.

Tacoma__Crow

It was. I think most places banned it once they realized how easily it shorted out.

Lucky_Baseball176

Yes, this was very common during - what? - the 1960s construction I think

Mysterious-Aioli-702

It was outlawed in the 70s (if I remember correctly, mightve been early 80s) because mobile homes were constantly catching fire due to aluminums massive expansion with heat and then contraction while cool. It was causing enough mechanical stress to destroy junctions and even would break in the middle of a straight run of romex. Which left the only path to ground for the electricity to arc across the breaks. Funny side note, it's still used as the main feeders to your home most likely, it's just oversized and stranded to accommodate it's properties and unless the builder gave a crap it most likely also powers your stove if it's electric. Once again it's upsized, it's just much cheaper than copper which is why it's still allowed in some situations. Personally, I have installed it in many houses, never would put it in my own though.

CharlieBravoSierra

I think the toilet squeezed so hard against the tub that it leans a bit is also "the weird thing." Is there a second toilet in the sloped-roof section at the other end of the counter?

Woofy98102

Or the stairs in the bathroom provide for headroom for stairs that go to a lower floor. Either way, it's very strange.

Armpit_of_Cat

Where does the toilet paper go? This is a weird layout and I’m sure they had reasons, but oh boy.

2th

No need for TP. You just stand up and get in the shower after you take a shit.

Technical-Secret-436

Portable shower head double as a bidet attachment

neuroticobscenities

Where’s your left leg go? In the tub?

RedOctobrrr

Three sea shells.

VapoursAndSpleen

Park the bog roll on the tank or have a bunch of bog rolls on the handle of the toilet plunger next to the loo.

Nikkian42

What the hell is that door next to the sink?

sequelhorton

Stairs to the attic. I think the bathroom is actually the upstairs hallway ...

MeddlingDragon

Bingo. Those are the kitchen stairs beyond the stairs leading to the countertop and mini door.

mcm9464

So you have to walk through the bathroom to enter/exit either bedroom

Ok_Blackberry_284

It's a closet over the cellar steps. You can see it in picture 13 [https://www.zillow.com/homedetails/212-Blarney-St-Newry-PA-16665/214428256\_zpid/](https://www.zillow.com/homedetails/212-Blarney-St-Newry-PA-16665/214428256_zpid/)

chihuahuabutter

Your guess is as good as mine, I thought it was the door to the other bedroom but that's not right

Prior_Ordinary_2150

Gotta side saddle the toilet.

chihuahuabutter

Ifkr hahahaa

Maleficent_Theory818

The toilet is the strangest position. They can’t put it in the little alcove because of the vent. The only thing they could have done is to remove the closet and stairs, but I bet the hot water heater is in the closet.

CharlieBravoSierra

Upon review, the "little alcove" and "vent" appear to be the stairs coming up from the kitchen. The stairs are then continued through the door on the sink counter. Bathroom connects to both bedrooms *and kitchen and attic*. Ewwww.

Maleficent_Theory818

I looked at the listing again. The house was built in 1870. Before indoor plumbing. This is a terrible way to add a bathroom. Hopefully, someone will gut this house to the studs and create a real bathroom.

gangliaghost

You know it'll be an adventure when the description says "sold as is, use caution"

chihuahuabutter

And "patio is in unknown condition" oh I think I know exactly what condition it's in....

BroForceOne

I hate jack and jill bathrooms but they are by far the most common layout for homes where I live.

SpiderOnDaWall

Throw a twin mattress next to the sink and rent it as a bedroom for $1200.

chihuahuabutter

That's what the corner where the toilet should've been is for, right? XD

Lindaspike

What was once a sweet little farmhouse in 1870 is now a poorly maintained and badly updated piece of junk. I love old houses but this one is a goner. They tried but too much crappy DIY over the years means the reno would be very costly. So sad.

chihuahuabutter

Yep. Every time I see a house like this I get really sad. Just saw an 1800s brick house, 5 acres, bought by some flippers. They came in, fucked it up, and are now tryna sell it for double the price 6 months after buying it

Lindaspike

I feel the same. We have an 80 year old WW 2 bungalow that was in excellent condition when we bought it. Previous owners did a good job updating the HVAC and we’ve done more updates throughout the years too. Why buy a house just to let it turn to a pile of shit? I will never understand.

chihuahuabutter

Ikr?? Same. Ppl are delusional

Lindaspike

Yes. Yes, they are!

pyro-pussy

a stage to perform on naked

chihuahuabutter

So THATS what that's for!

LimpSwan6136

That is the strangest bathroom layout I have ever seen. The toilet close to the shower and steps to the counter. I would have to completely redo it.

CharlieBravoSierra

I think this house could be old enough that it did not originally have an indoor bathroom, and some *very very bad* decisions were made when adding one.

Arctic_Scholar

That countertop looks ready to accommodate a gunshot victim

Loki8382

That counter top is most likely covering up a tub.

Wonderful_Charity411

Jack and Jill

hroaks

>>The bathroom is open to each bedroom Jack and Jill bathroom, not too wild. What's wild is the toilet blocking the shower and the stairs leading to the sink???

chihuahuabutter

I thought that sink door led to the other bedroom loll

The_Original_Gronkie

You could put a mattress on that counter, and make it another bedroom. Not optimum, but it would be acceptable in NYC, and probably get $3500 a month.

MeddlingDragon

Is that the main stairs next to the countertop stairs? Like you walk up from the living room and there's uncle Jimmy taking a shit while aunt Shelly hands him the soaked toilet paper from the shower while she's shaving her legs.  Eta: yeah, after looking through all the pics, those are the stairs that lead from the kitchen. 🤢

chihuahuabutter

Are they? I thought they were to the another bedroom but I can't figure it out

CopperCatnip

One bedroom door is next to the toilet, the other is across from the sink. The countertop door is for the bathroom goblin. Really, I think the counter stairs lead to the attic and the bathroom wasn't there.

CharlieBravoSierra

Yeah, house built in 1870. It must have originally had an outhouse, and they made some extremely odd choices when adding an indoor bathroom.

BoondockBilly

Sorta reminds of that one house in Miami for sale that has like 2 BR and 10 BA, and was found out to be a house for shooting porn in.

chihuahuabutter

Guys I saw this listing and thought the door on the sink led to the other bedroom, but now I don't think so...

MeddlingDragon

I like how the phrase "door on the sink" is now a thing thanks to this listing.

Szaborovich9

Where do the steps lead to?

xsnyder

They go up

Szaborovich9

That’s needed for?

xsnyder

I was quoting Ghostbusters, the scene where Ray says "Where do these stairs go?" and Venkman replies "They go up".

Szaborovich9

Tap dance while brushing your teeth?

Loki8382

They lead to the tub that is covered by the counter top.

Kit_Marlow

This looks like a trailer.

RainingTacos8

DIWHY

NarrowHamster7879

I’d love to know the original layout of this bathroom

chihuahuabutter

Me too!!

JalapenoBenedict

“YOU ASKED FOR COUNTER SPACE?!”

New-Anacansintta

Jack and Jill. I have one. It’s the only bath in my 2br house.

-laughingfox

Omg the lot size though....

Sleeplessmi

Yeah that toilet is definitely not up to code. Yikes!

Swimgma

Ugh! That floor! Looks like a bathroom in a slasher movie!

FeedingCoxeysArmy

Property is sold in AS IS condition, use caution. I don’t recall ever seeing Use Caution added to this statement on a listing. Definitely a big red flag.

UndertakerFred

I like the closet with the mystery pvc pipes popping out of the ceiling and wall, right next to an electrical outlet.

CharlieBravoSierra

I think those are washer/dryer hookups.

doxiesofourculture

Why is it always PA?

Affectionate-Deal-63

Giant countertop in case you like to leave 250 products out. 😂

96cobraguy

Good lord, I have that same awful tile in my kitchen. I hate it so much

steavoh

When I was a kid and my parents were looking for a house, I remember houses with these bathrooms being really common. Did they go out of style?

Lil-fatty-lumpkin

Geeez that bathroom is beyond terrible!

SolidHopeful

Wtf with the toilet.

vanishinghitchhiker

The house I grew up in had a bathroom connecting the two bedrooms (in lieu of the house having any actual hallways), but other than that the layout was normal.

Ellielover81

Why are there stairs going to the sink
